I lived in a 2 room apartment in Oakland for a bit in 1999 and worked in SF. My neighborhood was pretty sketchy so I stayed in after work most nights. But the rooms were so small it was hard to do the size paintings I like to do. And I was immersed in work in my brain, too, because I had a couple job. So I did a series that started on paper and featured people I worked with – from memory. I am not particularly good at getting a likeness from memory, unfortunately. So I can’t say any of the series looks a lot like the actual features of the people, but I didn’t stop til I captured something that felt right about them to me. I switched to canvas after doing a few of them, but this is one of the gessoed paper portraits.
